Blue light blockers or screen specs as I have dubbed them, are glasses that filter out the harmful blue light. Blue light blocking glasses are a must for people who spend time with computers, phones, tablets and other electronic equipment during the evening. These screens emit a blue light that tricks our brains into thinking that it is daytime and thus inhibit the production of melatonin which makes our bodies prepare for sleep. Melatonin, a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain, helps regulate other hormones and maintains our body’s circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is an internal 24-hour “clock” that plays a critical role in when we fall asleep and when we wake up. When it is dark, your body produces more melatonin. This lack of melatonin can wreck havoc on our ability to get a restful nights sleep as well as our overall health. Melatonin deprivation may speed the rate of brain aging or raise blood pressure and lead to kidney damage.

screenspecs

To prevent the harmful effects of blue light, screen specs help to shield our eyes from the rays the same way sun glasses protect our eyes from the sun. There are many options when it comes to choosing the right pair of screen spec for you. When choosing a lens, options range from the hardcore orange lenses that gamers swear by to a trendier alternative which is a slightly tinted lens with a stylish frame incase you want to wear them, you know, in front of people.

DO THEY WORK??

After two weeks of using my screen specs I purchased from amazon,  I’m here to report that I have 100% noticed a difference. I am guilty of having too much screen time before bed. Between checking social media on my phone, reading on my iPad, and surfing the web on my laptop I was setting myself up for failure. It would usually take up to an hour to wind down and fall asleep after my nightly binge on my devices. A few times I would get back on my device after not being able to fall asleep after twenty minutes. Now, I put on these glasses a few hours before bed and I fall asleep on time and wakeup feeling well rested.
