What is freelancing? A freelancer?

Have you been laid off because of a pandemic and you are itching to get back to working?

Or you are just starting out looking for work?

You might want to consider freelancing as an option.

Or you could become an independent contractor.

As an independent contractor, you could then go back to a former employer (for example) and offer your services as such.

Or seek work elsewhere.

The Indeed jobs site has an article that discusses the differences between freelancing and independent contracting.

So what is freelancing?

Wikipedia provides a very useful starting point for anyone wishing to learn about freelancing.

Topics covered include:

  • the types of work you might find or do as a freelancer
  • getting compensation for your work
  • copyright issues
  • demographics (did you know there is a Freelancers Union?)
  • benefits of freelancing
  • drawbacks and
  • legal aspects.

So, a frееlаnсеr іѕ someone whо earns mоnеу on a per-job bаѕіѕ, uѕuаllу for one-off оr short-term wоrk.

You would not be аn еmрlоуее for a firm.

Also, you mау be hіrеd to соmрlеtе different jоbѕ alongside each other bу vаrіоuѕ іndіvіduаlѕ оr firms unlеѕѕ your contract limits you tо working exclusively with a client untіl a particular рrоjесt іѕ соmрlеtеd.

In the next article we will talk about how to get started.

In the meantime, check out this awesome playlist of YouTube™ tutorials by John Morris, freelance web developer extraordinaire.

I am also recommending him because he is TRAINED to teach. I would also imagine you could apply many of his principles to whatever area you choose to freelance in.

Here he is…

Be aware that things are moving rather rapidly in the current environment and you would be advised to do your research. John does, however, provide updated (and even corrected) information as necessary.

In the next article we will look at a technique called “fear-setting”.

PS: I am not implying that you cannot learn from someone who is not trained to teach. I am saying you are better off going with someone who has walked the walk, not just talked the talk.

I have been trained to teach.

I have also freelanced for about ten years.

To a better, wiser, stronger YOU.
